ANNUAL CERT REPORT for POA Meeting

3-8-10

During the last year, the following actions were performed by CERT:

1. We started off with 18 members; lost one due to a move from the community; gained 5, bringing the total to 22 members. The new members underwent CERT training administered by the PGFD.

2. We then installed the ham radio station to ensure a more efficient communications system between SLCC and the EOC. It consists of a base station and a portable unit that can be used in the field to access health and safety issues. In addition, the CERT Leader has successfully passed the requirements of the FCC and became a qualified licensed radio operator.

3. We participated in 2 separate simulated disaster drills administered by the Charlotte County Emergency Operations Center (CCEOC). The subject for the first was a tornado that was traveling through the county. The second involved a water flood emergency condition in most of the community. CERT also tested our individual communication system which consists of the 2-way radios that each member is equipped with. Both systems worked well.

4. The guest speaker at one of our monthly meetings was Chief Ray Briggs of the PGFD. He delivered a presentation on the efforts being taken by the city to administer the vaccine to combat the H1N1 swine flu virus. He explained the various types of flu we are encountering. At his request for some volunteers to assist in this process, nine out of the 15 members present, volunteered. In addition, there were two volunteers from the Health Department who walked us through the process of how we can assist.

5. Monthly meetings were held and members were trained on:

a). Emergency Disaster Preparedness.

b). Fire/Safety.

c). Communications and equipment management.

6. Safety and Health Tips were written for Grapevine publication for:

           a). Preventing Burglaries.

           b). Tornadoes.

           c). Hurricanes.

           d). Hurricane Personal Evacuation Plan.

           e). Physical Activity.

           f). Cholesterol And You.

           g). Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

7. Resident Status Reports were upgraded and the red and yellow tapes around the resident light poles were replaced as necessary.

In conclusion, this exemplifies the pro-active actions taken by this group of SLCC volunteers to assist residents in time of need.
