Lakes and Roads & Maintenance Committee Report
Submitted by Fred Eyrich
Last March the Lakes and Roads & Maintenance committees were combined. Joe Ring is the director named to oversee the activities and I was made the chairman.
To start out with, Joe Ring and I did a survey of the street and traffic signs throughout our community and found many of them to be in need of extensive repair or replacement. Jack Carpenter agreed to repair and paint the ones that could be repaired. The board approved the purchase of a 24" X 24" plastic simulated wood Stop Sign to see how it would hold up in our weather conditions. These plastic 24" X 24" simulated wood signs that look like the wooden signs we have now cost $170.05 each. Jack Carpenter did such a good job in repairing the Stop Signs that we did not have to replace any more at this time. The plastic sign seems to be holding up. All the Stop Sign posts were washed down and painted as needed. All the posts now have a protective collar so that the weed whackers will not do damage to the sign posts. The street name sign repair project has been completed. I removed all the street name signs for repair and painting and after Jack Carpenter did his thing re-conditioning them, I re-installed them. All of the signs now have new "L" brackets that I made out of aluminum. The old brackets were steel which rusted. Now that this job is complete all of the signs have aluminum brackets.
This year the Speed Limit signs need to be cleaned, repaired and painted. It is a never ending job to keep the signage looking good. The signs are subject to the same problems as our mailboxes and lamp posts they need to be cleaned, repaired and painted on a regular basis. Because of the humidity, mold builds up and must be cleaned off. We need people in our community to step up to volunteer to help in various projects..
Joe Gartner continues to do the Red Tag program. It is suggested that Snow Birds change their lamppost light bulb before they leave for up north or give a spare bulb to a neighbor so that they can change it for you if it burns out while you are gone.
Another job that was done in the past year was I monitored the cutting back of vegetation encroaching on our wall along Burnt Store Road. This job was done by Greenscape. The road side of the wall was repaired, power washed and painted. We did not want to ask members of our community to volunteer to do this job because of the uneven terrain, snakes and other hazards that could hurt them. We hired a private contractor for this job. In order to do this job we had the cooperation of home owners along the wall to supply water for the power washing. Now that we took care of the roads let us address the Lakes.
Lake "D" had an erosion problem and before it took away backyards of the
properties on this lake we had it re-graded, rip-rapped and then sodded. Abbott
Construction was awarded the contract because they were the only company
contacted that was equipped to do the job. The residents along Lake D were all
invited to a meeting to discuss the work to be done so that they all knew what
to expect. The job was completed and it looks very good.
For the past year Jay Huber and Dick Swett have volunteered to spray for weeds
along our roadways. We thank Jay & Dick for your dedication in helping to keep
our roads looking good. We need additional volunteers to help with this job. We
supply the weed killer and sprayer. It only has to be done as needed
approximately once a month in the winter and depending on how much rain we have
once every two weeks in the rainy season.
When a contractor is hired please do not pay them until they clean up any mess they make. Recently a red roof was cleaned on Feathersound Drive the runoff from the roof stained the gutter along the street. The contractor should have cleaned this up.
