CERT REPORT for POA Meeting
8-14-06
If you are keeping up with the latest news, you will notice that the federal forecasters are revising their storm predictions downward. However, in light of what they say, SML CERT is recommending we not let our guard down. Remember, it only takes one direct hit to cause a disaster, and that August through October are typically the most active months of the season.
I repeat what was stated at the June meeting that now is the time for all residents to plan what they will do for a threatened hurricane. Keep tuned to the radio and television and seriously consider evacuating if recommended. Pre-plan your evacuation route, looking for alternative routes (other than I-75 and Route 41 as these will be heavily traveled and may not be the best routes). You can dial 5-1-1 on your phones to check for traffic conditions on I-75. For those residents with pets, there are a number of motel chains that accept pets. Check them out now. If any single resident households were considering staying, it would be a good idea to ride out the storm with a close friend or neighbor.
A sign will be posted at the main exit gate to remind those who are evacuating to notify the Security Guard. Please comply, as this will permit the CERT a quicker response when checking those residents who are remaining.
SML CERT holds monthly meetings where we train to maintain and improve our skills. This month, we reviewed steps we take to prepare for a disaster. We then practiced our communication skills with our 2-way radios. We also all re-familiarized ourselves by driving the CERT cart.
I will continue to update you on our activities during these POA meetings.
Are there any questions?
I thank you for this opportunity to speak.
