ANNUAL CERT REPORT for POA Meeting
3-9-09
INTRODUCTION:
The damages caused by a natural or man-made disaster can severely restrict or overwhelm the first emergency responders from Punta Gorda and/or Port Charlotte to our community. In essence, we could be isolated from theses surrounding communities. In the time that it takes for these emergency responders to answer our calls, we, in Seminole Lakes, will have to rely on our own resources. It is for this reason that the Seminole Lakes Community Emergency Response Team (SLCC CERT) has been established. SLCC CERT and was originally trained by the Punta Gorda Fire Department. CERT reports to the PG Emergency Operations Center and liaisons with the POA president.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
The following actions were performed during the last 12 months:
1. Resident Status Reports were upgraded.
2. CERT presented, with the PGFD, a Fire/Safety class to instruct the resident’s
on how to use fire extinguishers.
3. Monthly meetings were held and members were trained on:
a). Emergency Disaster Preparedness.
b) Fire Safety
c) Communications and equipment management
4. The red and yellow tapes around the resident light poles were replaced as
necessary.
5. Residents were reminded to check their portable electric generator; to
stock up on their hurricane disaster
supply kits; and to prepare for hurricane personnel
evacuation, if necessary.
6. In response to a request from the Punta Gorda Emergency Operations
Center, SLCC CERT was activated on
a "stand by" basis for Tropical Storm Fey. We
maintained a state of readiness, and in addition, issued a tropical
storm hurricane alert on the SLCC email web site.
7. CERT investigated the feasibility of establishing a ham radio station
as a alternate communications system between
SLCC and the EOC.

CONCLUSION:
SLCC CERT is always accepting applications to expand its membership to ensure
adequate coverage during the
hurricane season. Four new members were added while two moved from the
